Damn Prank Calls
We've all experienced it in one form or another, those annoying prank calls. Many of us are probably guilty of doing it ourselves when we were kids (but that was back before they had caller id). Yes I am not proud to say so, but I did "prank" or "crank" call with my friends when I was a young kid. I remember when I was 10 years old my best friend and I would just go down the phone book and call people with funny names to mess with them.
Now I am all grown up and I guess I'm getting payback or experiencing a form of 'karma'. But the kids today don't have it as easy as we did because of technology. Back in the 80's people didn't have 'caller id' and it would take an emergency situation or major incident to actually have the phone company trace the phone number that a call came from. Today most everybody has 'caller id' and while there are things like 'call block' to hide or mask a phone number, it doesn't take much to track down the phone number of a person who's calling you.
I recently experienced a kid calling me on my work number and bugging me. He was using crude language and saying some pretty horrible things. I knew it was a kid and I didn't feel threatened, but it did annoy the hell out of me. This kid didn't even go to any trouble to block his number. The actual phone number would show up on my caller id, but no name was with it. After the third day of harassment I was pissed off and decided to do a reverse telephone number search.
Well about 15 seconds after typing the phone number in the site I use (reversephonedetective) all the information I needed (and more) popped up on my screen. Since the home address listed was only about twenty minutes away I took a drive to the kid's house. His father (who the phone number was listed to) answered the door and listened to me as I explained why I was there.
You should have seen the look on this kid's face, it was priceless! His dad ripped him a new one and took away his cell phone on top of making him apologize to me. The dad was actually a little surprised at how easily I tracked him down and asked me to give him the name of the database that I had used.
Anyway I don't think I'll be getting anymore calls from that kid. Parents, you may want to tell your kids about this or let them read my article to discourage them from doing stupid things like this. You've got to be careful these days and use some common sense. I'm a pretty easy-going guy, but you never know, you just may end up pissing off the wrong person!
